Born in post WW II Manila as the youngest child in a large family, Sergon never had any of the creature comforts that Americans so often take for granted. His father worked many long hours on the tough docks of Manila to support his wife and children. Despite the financial hardships, Sergon grew up in an extremely close, loving, religious and supportive family environment. As a young boy, Sergon would sit at the kitchen table for hours drawing pictures fueled by his rich imagination. Soldiers, sailing ships and airplanes would flow off his tablets. By the time he was a teenager it was apparent that Sergon had immense artistic talent. Unable to afford formal art training for her son, Sergon’s mother rejoiced when she heard about a national art contest with a university scholarship as first prize. She cried tears of joy and pride when her son won first prize and became the first member of their family to go to college, graduating from the University of the Philippines with a degree in Fine Arts in 1968. After college, Sergon began to exhibit his art at galleries and shows throughout the Philippines. His lush landscape and still life paintings with their magical use of lighting effects quickly made him the favorite artist in his country. Sergon represented the Philippines in international art shows in Australia and Spain and was commissioned to do several public murals in Manila.
In the 1970’s, Sergon was invited to further his studies at the prestigious School of Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy. It was during this period that he was to gain inspiration for much of his later works. In particular, Sergon fell in love with the small villages and tranquil countryside scenes that he encountered in England, Scotland and Ireland. Here, he could sense the strong bonds of family, community and devotion to God that reminded him so much of his own up-bringing. Sergon returned to his native Philippines charged with a new enthusiasm and vitality that made his work even more powerful and popular. Sergon married Imelda and Since moving to California in 1980, he has had numerous and successful one man shows throughout California, as well as in New York, Chicago, Miami, Scottsdale, Tokyo, Antwerp, Cannes and Paris. His works are on display in various private and government offices, notably the Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. His numerous collectors include such noted figures as Uri Geller, Gabe Kaplan, and the former First Lady of the Philippines, Mrs. Imelda R. Marcos.
