In this memorizing work, Wyeth depicts Nogeeshik with his arms crossed against a stark background. Nogeeshik embodies Wyeth’s interest in the history of the Brandywine River Valley combined with the imaginary stories of pirates and Indians told by Wyeth’s father, N.C. to his children. The compellingly handsome face of Nogeeshik becomes a vehicle for exploring the manly pride and stoicism tied to the very antiquity of the land.

Wyeth rejects the critics and historians classification of him as a Realist preferring instead to identify his art as Expressionistic. Realism is such a limiting term with regard to Wyeth and cannot contain what astonishing mastery we see through Andrew Wyeth’s art. In Wyeth’s portraits, we see the soul of each model including Helga, Betsy, Karl Kuerner, and every one he painted whether he had just met them or known them for ten years prior. His portrait paintings are not just realistic; they are also full of emotion, darkness, light, and expression. Each Wyeth with a deeper meaning that is not readily evident.
