Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987)

Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola on August 6th, 1928 in Pittsburgh as the son of Slovak immigrants. His father was as a construction worker and died in an accident when Andy was 13 years old. Andy showed an early talent in drawing and painting. After high school he studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Warhol graduated in 1949 and went to New York where he worked as an illustrator for magazines like Vogue and Harpar's Bazaar and for commercial advertising. He soon became one of New York's most sought after  and successful commercial illustrators. During his career as a commercial artist Warhol received numerous awards for his talent. In 1963 Warhol founded his 'Factory' in New York, literally a manufactory of ideas and work, which influenced film in the 1960s, published the influential magazine Interview in the late 1970s, and also produced Warhol's own artwork: Warhol conceived the idea, and a 'worker' in his factory carried it out. After surviving attempts at his life, Andy Warhol died due to complications during his recovery from a routine gall bladder surgery in February, 1987. More than 2000 people attended the memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral.  Very few people recognize the fact that the pop art icon ,Warhol, was also a religious man. Two years after his death the Andy Warhol Museum opened in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Warhol had an abundance of success throughout his lifetime and major retrospectives that have traveled the world since his death. No artist in this century has more radically and controversially engaged the images and issues at the heart of American culture than Andy Warhol. He is considered the founder of the POP art movement and has been nicknamed the Prince of Pop. Warhol ranks  #1  for the most expensive American Pop artists sold at auction. Andy Warhol has the biggest market in the world.  He has been equated to Intel or IBM in the art market in an article from Forbes magazine. Warhol ranks fourth in the world index of artists by lots sold behind Picasso, Chagall, and Miro. What makes Andy Warhol’s artwork so valuable and collectible is not just the uniqueness, originality, and fresh nature of the style or being the first “POP” artist; it is because of the global appeal to people of all ages, races, religions, and cultures.
