Theodor Seuss Geisel (1937-2005)

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 2, 1904. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1925, he went to Oxford University, intending to acquire a doctorate in literature. Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his career as a little known editorial cartoonist in the 1920’s.  His unique artistic vision emerged as the golden thread which linked every facet of his varied career, and his artwork became the platform from which he delivered 44 children’s books, over 400 WWII political cartoons, hundreds of advertisements, and countless editorials filled with wonderfully inventive animals, characters and clever humor.  Geisel single-handedly forged a new genre of art that falls somewhere between the Surrealist Movement of the early 20th Century and the inspired nonsense of a child’s classroom doodles. His cartoons appeared in major magazines such as Life, Vanity Fair, and Liberty. While Theodor Geisel died on September 24, 1991, Dr. Seuss lives on, inspiring generations of children of all ages to explore the joys of reading.

Geisel adopted the nom de plume “Dr. Seuss” by taking his middle name, Seuss, and the fact that his father had always wanted him to be a doctor. Throughout his career many honors were bestowed upon Dr. Seuss. In 1984 Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize for his achievements as an author. Dr. Seuss has won three Academy Awards, he wrote and illustrated 44 children’s books.  Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham ranks third on the all time bestsellers list behind the Holy Bible and the dictionary.  Beyond the recognition and attention Dr. Seuss has achieved for his entertaining and educational children’s books, he has made a name for himself in the art world as well.  His well known characters from Cat in the Hat to the Grinch are available as limited edition works of art created by the master himself.  In addition to his iconic illustrative works we are able to offer you a key to unlock the Secret Art of Dr. Seuss.  The works reveal of the adult side and in some cases darker side of Dr. Seuss including the Bad Cat and Self Portrait of the Artist Worrying. Dr. Seuss’ artwork are in significant public and private collections around the world, including the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, and the Dr. Seuss Estate. A National Tour traveled throughout the United States in celebration of the Seussentennial in 2004.
