Norman Rockwell was born second son of Nancy and Waring Rockwell. He spent his childhood in New York City until his family moved to Mamaroneck when he was nine years old. After high school Rockwell returned to NYC to study at the Arts Student League. As a student Rockwell was given small illustration jobs but his first big breakthrough came with his first book illustration in 1912 for C.H. Claudy’s Tell Me Why: Stories about Mother Nature. At the young age of nineteen, Rockwell was already art editor for Boy’s Life. During his 60 year career Norman Rockwell captivated and inspired America with his true realism and perfectionism. Rockwell attained the title of “America’s most beloved artist”. Best known for his treasured covers of Saturday Evening Post from 1916 to 1963, he was an illustrator and painter of hope. The American way of life, the way Norman Rockwell wanted life to be. His values and ideals were built upon decency, faith and trust. A common thread woven into the fiber of each painting and print created by Rockwell. There is a Rockwell that touches everyone’s heart, whether it is his enchanting illustrations of Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn, the tenderness in the Doctor and the Doll or the inspiration of The Four Freedoms. The Norman Rockwell Museum is located in Massachusetts, not many artists are bestowed with a museum dedicated solely to their work. He has been commissioned for many special projects including the design of the 4 cent Boy Scouts of America 50th Anniversary stamp issued 2/8/1960. Rockwell’s “Four Freedoms” suite raised $139.9 million for the WW1 war effort. In 1969, Rockwell was named “Artist of the Year” by Artists Guild of New York. Rockwell’s “Golden Rule” earned him the Interfaith Award of the Nat’l Conf. of Christians and Jews. Rockwell was awarded the Presidential Freedom Medal in 1977 and pictured on $.29 US commemorative postage stamp in 1994.
